Hi, I'm relocating to Sussex County NJ and I'm looking for clubs and ride routes for the area. Also, I'm currently using 53/42 x 12/25 gearing which works pretty well for all but the biggest hills here in KS (yes, we have some good size hills). I understand that Sussex is relatively hilly and would like to know if I'll need to change gearing by swapping a 39T for the 42T inner chainring or will I be okay as is?

TIA for any info!!

Here are two clubs in the area:

http://www.ocbicycleclub.org/

Skylands is a racing oriented club which promotes many races throughout the area. A mid-week training series. A couple of weekend road and MTB races. A CX series in the Fall.

The Orange Cnty club is less race oriented but offers a good variety of rides just north of Sussex in NY.

There is plenty of climbing in the area. You will be in the foothills of the Appalachians. Hills tend to be the short but steep variety. The terrain is constantly undulating. I wouldn't worry about your gearing too much. I rode in the area for many years with a 42x23. I've since become more wise and typically ride a 39x27. It's not because I have to though. :)

Highly recommend the 39t. No, you don't "need" it. I remember riding with a guy who never shifted out of his big ring. His cadence must have been around 30 or less on some of the steeper climbs. So you can do it but I don't suggest it :)
