My Soma commuter has Shimano 10sp, 50/39 with 12/27, and a TRIPLE rear derailler to take up the slack.

For a light, loaded tour, can I take the Shimano compact off my other bike (50/34), and put it on my Soma commuter? both use xtrnl bbs....

Cut a new chain?
Adjust front derailler?
adjust rear derailler?

Basically I'm going from 50/39 and 12/27 to 50/34 and 12/27.

My other option is to buy a 12/34 cassette with my Soma's 50/39 but that involves money.

Unless your chain is longer than necessary now, you shouldn't have to change it. As for derailleurs, put it together and adjust if necessary. The front might need a tweak to make the big jump smoothly, but probably not much. All you're changing is the small ring, right?
