Ok so I decided to change my trek 1200 from a triple to a double. I was wondering what you guys thought as far as what cheap crank I should get. Also I wanted to know since I have a 105 rear derailleur do i have to buy a special double rear der. also?
First, please do a search - there are countless threads exactly like this.
For fun, though, I'll post my opinion. You could just remove the third chainring, adjust your front derailleur, and leave it alone. Since you have Tiagra/105 stuff, your front shifter has trim and won't need to be replaced. The only thing you might want to replace for performance reasons are the BB - get a narrower one to fix your chainline.
Other than that, you're fine. Your cassette is geared ok for double use, your rear derailleur will work great, etc. Don't replace your crankset unless you really want to.
I did the same change on my ride and only replaced my BB.
