Back in the old days before helmets came along, most riders wore cycling caps. Usually turned around, not with the brim tweaked up like in the photo. I think it was just a fashion statement for the movie.

Way back in the '80s Spike Lee movies had a lot of lycra cycling shorts, caps, etc. I went to a black/white school and the cycling shorts & caps were regular attire as well. Yeah, we were cool in the '80s.
