I bought my wife an Amazon Echo. I waited until the whole AI industry has progressed. She is pretty cool.
I think it is an enhancement with some of the simple chores of life like finding out when the hockey game is on, making a shopping list, listening to music, setting alarms, etc.

What sayeth the lounge??

My HAL-9000 unit won't let me post anything negative about AIs.

I put it on the same level as automatic transmissions, GPS, electronic shifting on bikes and microwave ovens. They are nice to have, but if they went away tomorrow, I could function just as well without them.

I was with you until the just as well. GPS makes life so much easier. Especially if your job requires travel. Microwaves cut lots of time off dinner prep. Automatic trannys with shiftronic keep you from stomping a clutch in traffic.

Electronic shifting, well I agree with you on that one. lol

I will wait a few more years, I don't think the technology is there yet.
That is what I thought a year ago. For the low price point, I know think it is worth the technology. Today, I was cooking dinner. Alexa, play Pandora outlaw country. So while I am listening to music and chopping some food, Alexa set the timer for 10 minutes. Pretty sweet in the kitchen when your hands are busy. My wife is going to add skills (apps) one of which will be a recipes skill. She is already using the shopping list, timer, alarm, etc. She is listening to music and setting a timer when she goes to bed. Yeah, I know an alarm clock will do that but it is sweet to verbally pick your choice of music and the time you want to wake up.

I drove a truck nationwide for 15 years without a GPS. A paper map did me just as well and no battery. GPS is only as good as well as whomever programmed it. Microwaves save time but not so much as to be indispensable.

MS Cortana?

Last summer I played with Cortana and was pretty happy with the result. I built a Windows 10 media machine for Netflix and stuff but mainly for music. Cortana does pretty good with simple commands, play music, open files maybe more.

I am intrigued with the concept of the smart home. I think we are on the verge of seeing this explode in the housing market....items like Echo, Nest will pioneer the way.

Alexa has been downsized. "Dot" is coming, without the speaker and at half the price.
Yeah, I may buy one and hook up to the stereo I had in my office. Old analog Marantz tuner/amp with polk audio bookshelf speakers and single powered subwoofer.

when I see Ai I instantly think Adobe Illustrator instead of Artificial Intelligence. I'm a victim of my industry
