Hmm... Steve-O did a presentation earlier this week and dropped some new products, mostly iPods. Of them all, the new Nano looked most compelling to me:

Basically, I find myself using my iPods mostly at the gym. The new Nano has a clip so you can wear it (it's almost as small as a Shuffle now), and has a multi-touch screen... basically, it's the 'Shuffle with a screen' that everyone's been looking for.

Also has FM radio, not that that's very compelling, aside from NPR. 95% of our local radio stations suck horribly and should be blown up. :skep:

The 24 hour battery life is very nice... I hate charging, always forget to.

Downsides: Screen is too small for watching video (don't think that's even supported), not that I'd want to watch vids on anything smaller than an iPod Touch anyway.

Also, at $149, it's a bit pricey for its intended use. The 8 or 16GB storage is probably overkill, considering there's no video. A 4GB model for cheaper would've been great.

I suspect I'm about to buy one anyway. Damn you Steve Jobs *shakes fist in general direction of Cupertino*

Has Apple yet done anything about the easily scratched shiny backs of those damn things? Or is it still a "feature"?

Terryb probably already has 4 of them. But they are not all red, probably.

Ironically, the only iPod I ever had a problem with was a 1st gen Shuffle... no screen. :skep:

Walked into my local Apple Store, they replaced it, no Qs asked. Was surprised by this, expected a bit more back n' forth/drama.

I don't want to overstate this, because I'm not a techno-geek,/Apple-geek, but Steve Jobs has seen THE human future as no one else quite has, and has undertaken to deliver us that future with some damn beautiful and seductive technology. In doing so, he's also designing that future. Self-fulfilling projection.

Don't say yay or nay on whether that's a good thing or not, but do enjoy the elegance of Jobsworld. It draws you happily in.

No it doesn't, commie.
Then why is Apple's market cap now bigger than Microsoft's?

There's some things I don't like about Steve Jobs/Apple, but he must be doin' something right.

$49 for a shuffle vs. 149 for a Nano. Shuffle FTW! And it has buttons again. FTW squared.

Voiceover means I don't need a screen for the shuffle.

I bought a Nano so I could have something to jack music through the Bose dock Regan, Goneril and Cordelia gave me for Christmas. MyShuffle won't do that. Then I get an iPhone and I'm deep into Jobsworld.

I like my free Sansa I got with rewards points that were about to expire. 2gb on board and a mini-SD slot for expansion that I will never use. It works great. It's about the size of a thick credit card. Any smaller and the controls would be too small for my hands.

Did I mention it was free?
I have a 4g Fuze now. Works fine with my Rhapsody subscription--something iPods can't do. F*ck ITunes. I don't want to spend .99 each time I want a song.

Video not supported is a total failure. I don't want a huge ipod. I use the 4th gen nano when I travel. At 16gb it is big enough to handle all of my music and still hold a few movies. Nice for the trips across the ocean I seem to be taking without having to haul a laptop or backpack on board a crowded jet. If it had video support, I would be all on board. Right now it looks like a shuffle with a video screen. I use my shuffle when I run, and I could care less what is playing on it so why do I care about a screen? And to pay $100 more for a shuffle seems crazy. Another feature that wont work is the few games I have purchased through Itunes. Simple ones like yahtzee and scrabble. Don't need a big screen or fance controls, but not supported.

I think it's a bit of a weird move. They took away the camera, shrunk the screen and basically made it a touch screen shuffle. What's the point? I don't think there's enough difference between it and the shuffle. You've got to look at the screen every time you want to change a song? No thanks. It's like a gym ipod except it would be inconvenient at the gym.
Now the new Touch on the other hand...yes please.
