The early morning. Birds chatter away, gears whir and tires hum against the asphalt as your mind wakes your body and your body struggles against your brain.

The rising sun paints the sky lightly with its soft brush

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688149968/" title="144-4441_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3152/2688149968_ab77014b27_o.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="144-4441_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Calm and silent. The sky is angry, threatening the tranquility of chat.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687337847/" title="144-4444_IMG_2.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3108/2687337847_350ff01e96_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="144-4444_IMG_2.JPG" /></a>

Chit chat chit chat. What you hear as you approach the climb, cerebral deception of the task to be undertaken.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687340389/" title="144-4448_IMG_2.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3206/2687340389_d7d0887923_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="144-4448_IMG_2.JPG" /></a>

Things said that shouldn’t be said, reactions fleetingly caught.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687341117/" title="144-4449_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3090/2687341117_57bcacbb0b_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="144-4449_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Unhh unnhh unhh the first bit of climb, taxing the legs, lungs rebelling heart pounding, 6:00am sun striving to break the cloud cover.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688156050/" title="144-4451_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3088/2688156050_1864b65710_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="144-4451_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Saguaros grasp the clouds, staccato notes of verticality to match your pounding heart and legs.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687345959/" title="144-4456_IMG_2.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3088/2687345959_47ecd5c6aa_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="144-4456_IMG_2.JPG" /></a>

Hum

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687346555/" title="144-4457_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3238/2687346555_9285f4c983_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="144-4457_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Turquoise paints the clouds, cyclists ahead the pace quickens, legs spin, breathing becomes labored, grin cracks.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688163348/" title="144-4462_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3084/2688163348_efb5b785a9_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="144-4462_IMG.JPG" /></a>

The sun pierces the morning clouds, exciting the moisture in the air and feeding the climb, the faster you move the cooler you will be

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688164638/" title="144-4464_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3284/2688164638_02bf365452_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="144-4464_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Flowers etched in stone

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688800735/" title="144-4471_img_3 by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/2688800735_43fa567dd6_o.jpg" width="306" height="1001" alt="144-4471_img_3" /></a>

The sky threatens, my breathing sounding like raw emotion, rough and sharp, a challenge from man to sky.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688176160/" title="144-4478_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3156/2688176160_b81f73ecd9_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="144-4478_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Arrival. Breathing labored, chatting with others, the crackle of wrappers and the content sounds of refueling machines.

Relaxation and repose. Breathing slows, an eagle calls from a precarious mesquite in a craggy cliff, wind eddies and whirls.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688194882/" title="144-4500_IMG_2.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3276/2688194882_7b305fc090_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="144-4500_IMG_2.JPG" /></a>

Some legs tired, metronomes of pace climb higher.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688196724/" title="145-4502_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3050/2688196724_b5194ee0e0_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="145-4502_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Endorphins high others fly down the mountain, brains screaming in delight, legs pumping and eyes fixed on the road.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687386493/" title="145-4508_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3184/2687386493_ff5910f085_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="145-4508_IMG.JPG" /></a>

Bike at ready, body relaxed, I hurl myself back down the mountain.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687392661/" title="145-4516_IMG_2.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/2687392661_74cd25d6ba_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="145-4516_IMG_2.JPG" /></a>

Babble. Mid-descent the brook speaks to me

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688211828/" title="145-4521_IMG_2.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3198/2688211828_b8acda5154_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="145-4521_IMG_2.JPG" /></a>

Zing. I am enticed back on the road

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2688913179/" title="zoom by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3165/2688913179_787550b202_b.jpg" width="1024" height="380" alt="zoom" /></a>

The clouds move to recapture the earth, slicing through the air we race to beat the clouds to the valley.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidandmelinda/2687399345/" title="145-4524_IMG.JPG by Melinda and David, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3124/2687399345_06693154a1_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="145-4524_IMG.JPG" /></a>

The sun paints the Catalinas in hue and contrast, the clouds recapture the apex I ride home tired and complete.

I love the desert down there. I wish I could get down more often, but you've got more guts than me riding with those kind of storms brewing. Great report.

I'll be joining you soon.

Is that Gates Pass or Mt. Lemon? After serving a five year sentence in hell (Maine), my memory is fading. But I'll be returning in a couple weeks to hear that signature ticking sound- the ticking sound the galvanized guard rails of Mt. Lemmon make as they heat up and expand in the early morning. Then, I'll smell the frying bacon and French toast at Cafe Paraiso!

Mt lemmon up to 7 cataracts just didn't have any more time than that. It is perfect here right now, mellow low to mid 90's, rain in the afternoon and some humidity. It's the part of Tucson people don't know about, this is a great time of year to ride a road bike.
