Bicycling Bonanza comes to Northern Nevada July 27-29
RENO, NEV. - Northern Nevada's Premier Cycling Event Celebrates its 20th year July 27-29 with racing and festivities for everyone from the pro racer to the fun-loving spectator.
The Tour De Nez is known throughout the cycling world for great racing on varied and challenging courses, and throughout the region as an off-the-wall fun event that goes well beyond the normal cycling competition.
"We're excited about the 20th anniversary and we're excited about all the festivities that surround it," said Tour De Nez Executive Director Tim Healion. "We'll have super exciting road racing - and the parties and everything people have come to know as the quirkiness of the Tour De Nez."
On the competitive side, top cyclists from around the country will start out with a unique sprint event that pits heats of racers against each other and the clock on a one mile course from the University of Nevada, Reno campus to the Reno Arch on the downtown strip Friday night - open to everyone, so you can see how you stack up!
Saturday the biggest little bicycle race goes bonanza with a road race in historic Virginia City that will challenge both pro men and women with steep climbs and fast descents. And Sunday's action wraps up with the downtown Reno criterium along the Truckee River that racers and spectators have come to know and love.
The Tour De Nez continues to be a leading venue for hand cycling - hand driven bicycles for those unable to pedal a traditional bike - with racing and events throughout the weekend.
On the fun and festivities side, the Tour De Nez takes messenger culture to a new level with the World Championship Cocktail Rules Gold Sprint, where competitors line up on stationary fixed gear bicycles plugged into a computer for a 500 meter race - all while holding a drink!
A Tour De N'Ally Cats messenger style scavenger hunt, ride with the pros, and the best parties and music round out the weekend's fun.
"It's just going to be crazy, goofy fun. Playing outside is what it's all about around here and cycling is certainly one of the biggies," Healion said. "This all started out 20 years ago as a party that we thought we'd add a bike race to, and now it's an international event with a great cult following."
