A bear is not something that I would want to run into.

From personal experience - no impact but memorably close:

A cow.
A wild turkey flying across the road at eye level.
Deer (more times than I care to remember).
A very large snapping turtle.
A guy with an armload of plastic lawn furniture.

the other day, i had an oddly long necked bird try to ram it's head in my spokes as a cruised by at about 35 km/h...it was standing in the middle of the road (a big bird about 2 feet tall) and i couldn't decide which side to try and pass it on...i went left in the end, and of course so did the bird...missed him by 2 inches maybe...lucky, as i was holding my line getting ready to continue straight no matter what happened...the was easily potential for me to have taken his head clean off...

probably would have been better than what the wife whipped up for dinner

We ran over a chicken and killed it with our tandem a long time ago. We were in a group ride, in the front of the pack with bikes on either side. Nothing I could do.

I've come VERY close to hitting deer on the morning (5:15AM) leg of my commute. Of course, it's dark then. I was on a downhill going about 30 - 32 mph, when a good sized buck ran across the road in front of me. I'll bet I didn't miss him by more that a couple of feet. Yep! That would have left a mark.

A cat, I did not hit it. It ran out in front me and I bunny hoped over it only to land my rear wheel in a pot hole which cracked my drive side chain stay at the drop out on my 753 frame. I had a very low opinion of cats for a long time after that.

Suicidal squirrels. It's amazing how easy these pictures are to find. I've bunny-hopped and swerved more than a few.

Around these parts we have the Teton Pass. 5 miles - 10% grade climb. One time I was climbing it and this Kamikaze butterfly came out of nowhere and flew right into my wheel! Luckily, because I was going so fast that my cyclometer was toggling between 0 and 2mph, it flew right through completely unscathed. I don't think it even noticed that it flew through a spinning wheel.

I once had a deer run into me. I was riding home trying to keep ahead of a rainstorm coming in from behind me. I all of the sudden crash flipping over and landing on my shoulder breaking my collar bone. I never even saw the deer, a motorist who was behind me saw the whole thing and called 911.

Another time I was coming down this big hill and I see 3 deer in the middle of the road. I was heading straight at them and at the last moment they all scattered. It was a very close call.
I've read that it's best to actually head straight at an animal since it will try to avoid you, and you don't really know which way it's going to go when it does. Although that time I didn't really intentionally head right at them it just worked out that way.

How could you ever get back on the bike??? I might not sleep tonight just thinking about the potential carnage if that Monarch hadn't made it through safely. Phew.....

My riding partner hit a bear last year in Washoe Valley, Nevada. Black bear also. He glanced off of it's rear and flew off into the bushes. No injury to the shocked bear, but my bud got all scratched up good.
