We had ridden a fairly hilly 200k on Saturday so we were looking for something a little easier on Sunday. Miss M was going to a multi-day seminar in Shepherdstown starting Monday so that seemed like a reasonable place to ride from.

West Virginia has a lot of empty back roads and we took full advantage of them on our way to Harpers Ferry where the roads get busier and wider.

Virginia.

We crossed over the Shenandoah River into Virginia where the traffic really sucked. It was pretty cold in the shade too. Fortunately we were only in Virginia for about 4 miles before crossing the Potomac River into Maryland.

From the bridge looking upriver Virginia is the left shore, Maryland is on the right and Harpers Ferry West Virginia is in the middle between the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. The rivers are cold and full today but in the summer they are full of tubers and rafters slowly floating downstream enjoying a break from the heat.

Maryland.

Traffic looked bad once we crossed the river but we were soon riding on wide empty country roads on our way to lunch at mile 50 in Brunswick.

We had fresh homemade soup and bread-mmmm good.

Sometimes eating is the best part of the ride.

We shared a nice meal and even had seconds.

The C&O Canal Towpath.

After lunch we headed north along the river past some of the worst poor trash housing we had seen-it wasn’t pretty.

Right across the river from Harpers Ferry we had a choice to make-take the hillier roads or the flat but dirt towpath. Since it hasn’t rained for more than 3 weeks we decided to have an adventure-we took the towpath. Miss M got to the front and started to ride away from me.

The path started out nice and dry with just a few soft patches to slow us down. As we rode further away from Harpers Ferry it started to get wetter and finally icy.

Hike and Bike.

Lately we have been going for long walks after our Sunday rides. This time we were going to walk a ways during our ride. After a few miles of this we were glad to cross the river back into West Virginia where Miss M will spend the next few days before riding home.

It was going to be a long drive home without her.

Looks like spring is still a ways off...

...not that you'd let that stop you. Most of those roads seemed to have pretty generous shoulders; is that typical there? Very inviting, especially after riding across Orange County this weekend on a bunch of six-lane roads that left about six inches of room at curbside for bikes.

Please tell us that van was a rental--it's difficult to get my mind around the idea of you two owning something with four wheels.

We took our tandem to a bunch of auto dealers.

Finally found that the extended wheelbase Chevy Venture minivan with captains seats would hold the tandem without taking the wheels off.

We bought it new about 4 years ago and have 27,000 miles on it. I figure Miss M and I have put about 120,000 miles on our bicycles in the same time.

It is actually kind of sick to look at the numbers that way-we must be nuts.....
