I have a Trek 1980 400 series that I am restoring, the tires are in pretty good shape but do not hold air, I cant imagine they had tubeless in the 1980's, they are 27x1 1/8 can I throw a 700c tube in there?

Presta/schrader will depend on whats there now. Different size holes in the rims.

If the tires are old and cracked you should replace them too.

The schrader valve might be to large for the valve stem hole in the rim. If it only fits the presta valve, you can drill it out with a 5/16" drill bit to make it fit a schrader valve.

If the tires are from the 80s I would not trust them regardless of how they looked. In fact, I wouldn't trust tires that were much older than 6-7 years.

You don't want to use Shrader valves anyway. They're a PITA with high-pressure road tires. The presta valve is designed for that use, and works much better.

For narrow road tubes, presta is easier to find, anyway, and usually cheaper.
