My (sucky) Sigma has a total time so I figured my average speed for the 1000 miles I've ridden so far this year and came up with 17.5 mph. This includes all warm-up, cool down, climbing, recovery rides, etc. I think that's pretty good (for a formerly fat, 47 year old that is really only in his 2nd year of cycling). What kind of averages is everybody else at?

I've got about a 46771.10700082799 furlongs/fortnight average so far. Estimated due to my refusal to put a computer on my fixie/Singlespeed.

I don't have a computer on any of my bikes. But based on feel, I think my average is slightly less than yours. I'm certain, however, that I can take you in a sprint, especially if it's slightly uphill or into a strong headwind. :D

I need to leave the house by 5 am to make it to work with time to change clothes. I get to work sometime between 6:15 and 6:30 and it is 21 miles.

Seriously, average speed is apples and oranges. When I lived in coastal Virginia (flat), I could end up with a 20+ average for the week due to fast group rides on Tuesday and Thursday. Here in the PNW, the hills and weather plus commuting drop the average to around 16 for the week. I could commute faster, but by Friday I would be toast and not be able to ride on the weekend.

I go fast enough.

Oh boy. Put on the asbestos undies. For whatever reason "speed" questions draw lots of fire around here. One of the reasons is due to the variables that effect speed.

FWIW I have been at around 18.1 for all rides since mid March, 800+ miles. (generally flat riding with only 35'/mile of climbing) I expect being in Idaho your 17.5 is far more impressive than my 18.1.

I'm anything but average. On even a medium day, I'm mean.

I'm as fast as I need to be to make you feel insecure about your current level of cycling awesomeness.
I'm quite content with my "current level of cycling awesomeness". I'm definitely not the fastest guy of the guys I ride with. Nor will I ever be, nor do I want to be, nor am I the slowest. I just want to ride my bike.
