(AP) - Andre Greipel of Germany has led a frenzied bunch sprint to win the fifth stage of the Tour de France -- his second straight -- while Fabian Cancellara retained the yellow jersey for a sixth straight day.

The mostly flat 121-mile trek from Rouen to Saint-Quentin was almost tailor-made for sprinters except for a slight uphill near the finish.

"Greipel wins again as Armstrong looms over Tour
By Justin Davis (AFP)

SAINT-QUENTIN, France - Germany's Andre Greipel claimed his second win in as many days Thursday as the Tour de France was rocked by the doping controversy swirling around seven-time winner Lance Armstrong.

Lotto rider Greipel had claimed his first win of this year's race on Wednesday when he dominated a small bunch sprint devoid of rival Mark Cavendish after the Briton suffered a crash inside the final 3km.

This time, Cavendish was in the mix but after a tough, slightly uphill finish that was arguably more suited to his rivals the Team Sky fast man could only finish fifth.

Greipel, taking his third win of the race after his maiden win ahead of Cavendish last year, beat Australia's Matt Goss (Orica-GreenEdge) at the end of the 196km ride with Argentina's Juan Jose Haedo of Saxo Bank in third.

"I'm very happy with this second win and I want to say thank you to my teammates for all their hard work," said Greipel, who was quick to affirm his status as one of Cavendish's main threats this year." Read more from AFP...

"Greipel fights off Cavendish to make it two wins in a row

(CNN) -- Germany's Andre Greipel made it two wins in two days as he out sprinted rival Mark Cavendish to complete victory in the fifth stage of the Tour de France.

The Lotto rider held off Australian Matt Goss and Argentine Juan Jose Haedo after powering round the outside on a slightly uphill finish on the 196.5km leg between Rouen and Saint-Quentin.

Team Sky's Cavendish, who injured his right hand in a crash during Wednesday's stage, managed to avoid a similar pile-up on Thursday but could only finish fifth.

The crash 3km from home took out Peter Sagan from the Liquigas team, holder of the green jersey, and American sprinter Tyler Farrar." Read more from CNN International...
