Interesting article here:

Yahoo Sports

It points out that in the Tour, every ten years (on years ending with "6") there has been an end to one era and a suprise winner.

1956: Three time winner Louison Bobet pulls out of race and unknown Walkowiak beats favored Charly Gaul.

1966: Five time tour winner Jacques Anquetil quits after the Alps and teammate Lucien Aimar beats the favored Raymond Poulidor.

1976: Five time tour winner Eddy Merckx loses to Lucien Van Impe, a Belgian climber who had never been regarded as potential overall winner.

1986: Five time tour winner Bernard Hinault is expected to challenge for a record 6th Tour, but keeps his secret promise to teammate Greg LeMond and (reluctantly) helps him beat the favored Laurent Fignon.

1996: Five time tour winner Miguel Indurain tried for a record 6th win, but is unseated by Bjarne Riis with the help of a young German team mate named Jan Ullrich.

2006: Seven time winner Lance Armstrong retires, and the favorites Ivan Basso and Jan Ullrich are beaten by ______________________________?
