Not in my experience. My tubeless conversion - Kyseriums with Stans valve and sealant (no tape) - holds air for as long, if not longer than prior tube setups. Guess it depends how lucky you get with the valve seal and tire fit.

On another note, is there any safety advantage with tubeless specific wheels? My very limited understanding is that they just make tires easier to mount.
