A buddy asked me if it was possible to mount shimano ultegra triple cranks on a 2001 Trek 8000 mountain bike. The bike has old shimano xt cranks on it now. I had no idea. I figured someone might know here.

Thanks

Should be possible as long as the bb matches or he buys a matching bb ... but the gearing will be totally different and not as conducive to mtb'ing due to the ring sizes on the road crankset.
Going the other way, mtn crankset on a road bike, is a little more dificult because the shifters might not be able to cover the distance between rings. Mtn shifters can usually be adjusted to match the narrower road crank.

I had a Deore crankset and XT front and rear derailures with Sora brifters on a burley touring bike and it had some trouble shifting up front.

Try before you buy. The larger chainrings may not clear the chainstay.
that would be my thought too.
