I am trying to figure out if I can use a short cage ultegra rear derailleur on my gravel bike. I'd like to run a cassette range of at least 11-32 if not a but bigger. I would be running either 38t or 40t up front. From the tooth calc equation it shouldnt be an issue but I am not sure. Also since it is not clutched will I have to worry about chain drop?

Checkout Wolftooth's road link. It will allow a mid-cage 6700 handle up to a 42t cassette if I recall correctly. Definitely go with a narrow wide front ring - Wolftooth, Race Face, etc which will help with chain drop. If you plan on doing rough gravel or mtb you will probably need a clutch derailleur, else the 6700 with B screw tightened and narrow/wide front ring should be good enough.
