MB1 posted about bike to work day overload. I had a weekend full of bike overload. Friday was Bike To Work Day here in Memphis. This was the first time to event was really promoted. Bicycling Magazine listed Memphis as one of the most bike unfriendly cities and the city is trying to do something about it. They city got behind BTWD with group rides, food stations and swag for the participants. The day started with an early morning shower but cleared just in time for the ride in. My group rode into downtown from East Memphis. We did a tour of the energizer stations and then went to the bike festival on Court Square at noon. The festival had many of the local bike shops and green organizations set up displays, and was attended by city and county dignitaries. I got to try out one of those new hybrid electric bikes

Saturday morning my wife and I did the local club ride. I wanted an easy ride because of my Sunday plans. We rode downtown to the farmers market. On the way home we passed a yard sale at one of the large old midtown houses. No I didn’t buy the purse. We did have to return with the car to pick up what we did buy.

Saturday night I made my way out to the Memphis in May Triathlon. I took my rolling hotel room and camped for the night. That was better than getting up at 3:00am to get out to the race Sunday morning. I was asked by a friend / former employer to join his relay team and do the bike leg. He has done this race for years and his regular biker could not come this year. He is 87 years old and does the swim leg. The MIM Tri has more or less created the grand master class just for him. The total age of the 3 participants has to total 180 years old. We won our class and I now have a biking trophy for my mantle. Of course we were the only entrants in that group.

MB beat me to it. That box is awesome. Dog was cute also. I think that blue purse goes well with your jersey. :)

I've done MIM Tri numerous times--one of my favorite races ever. Very well organized with excellent post race festivities. Glad to hear it still went off after the floods! :)

Your pics make me homesick for the south. Thanks for posting!

The MIM Tri has just singed a 5 year deal with one of the Tunica casinos. For at least the next 5 years, the race will at Harrah's Tunica.

I absolutely NEED a teardrop trunk rack!

Bike unfriendly :(. FWIW, I don`t think a single auto (other than parked ones) shows up in any of those pics. Granted, most of them didn`t feature roads, but several of them did. Did you just get lucky with that? They ought to use this ride report to prove bike friendliness.
