Yeah, looks like an exagerated biopace

The theory is you tailor the chainring diameter to the 4 power sections of the pedal stroke. Large diameter for the up and down and smaller on the forward and back. Allow faster gearing on the up and down and slow on the for aft.

They work with lower cadance but are a big problem at high cadence. When high cadence came in vogue the Biopace disappeared.
