Since this is a cycling forum, the obvious event that should be added is cyclocross. While it's traditionally not a summer event, it probably wouldn't fit in with a winter olympic venue. They already have just about every other form of cycling: road, mountain, track & BMX. And I suppose they could add some sort of X-games stunt event, like they have in the winter games.

But what got me thinking about this was watching the rhythmic gymnastics today, and I thought it would be cool if they had a competitive juggling event.

At one time I think they had ballroom dancing.

anything's better than taekwondo or handball.

i would love to see some emotional weeping atop the podium while the national anthem plays after wins in miniature golf or ostrich riding.

They hinted at having "climbing". Give me a break. I think summer cyclocross would be great. I watch it live (streamed via computer) all winter and those guys have tremendous skill and fitness. But it does tend to be a bit of a procession as there are rarely any surprise winners (much like 100 & 200m track)

I'd go for nekkid (women's) beach volleyball too.

I know we are all cyclists but cmon, BMX racing?????? I feel the same way with about snowboard racing.

Gunfights with paintball pistols or electronic sensors would be fun. Single elimination.

Barrel jumping! On ice skates for the winter games and on rollerblades for the summer games. Line up barrels and see how many you can jump over.

The coolest thing is we are getting Ultimate Frisbee in the 2020 Olympics!

-along with that, we have "shenanigans," different sideline and after-game goof-off stuff.

Throw, run, and catch is a good challenge: how far can you throw the disc, run after it, and catch your own throw? I have seen a buddy do this the length of the field from one end zone into the other - 70 yards away - essentially throwing a scoring catch from one end of the field to the other.

That, itself, would be more interesting than watching shotput.

I'd be happy just having Team USA get through the Olympics without doing anything stupid that causes an international embarrassment.

How about we do away with "Race Walking"!. I mean seriously. How is that even a sport? Maybe "Cartwheeling" could be good too?

Buy yea, Cyclocross would be great.

the winning time in the men's 50 km race walk was 3:40.

it's a real sport. try it, you'll puke thru your nose trying to come even remotely close to that performance.

All games should be dangerous if not deadly. Track cycling should have those pointy hubs like the race scene in Grease. Get rid of the rest and do bike jousting. I'd let BMX stay if it were a figure 8 track and you could knock each other down like roller derby. Hammer throwing, javelin, shot put, anything thrown should be in a field where everyone is throwing them at each other. Flaming oil slicks in the pools. Make the gymnasts join the fighting sports or go home. Running games should have something to run from like bears or the Derny man with a flame thrower.

Thinking along these lines, the perfect Olympic sport would be rollerball! Mix speed skating, motorcycles, brutality with practically no rules, and a steel ball shot out of a cannon....can't get much better than that! :D

I didn't say it wasn't hard. Lots of things are hard, that aren't olympic sports. But... it's *walking*.. which just gimped out running (can't have both feet off the ground). We had it on the TV in the breakroom at work today, and half the people in the room didn't realize it wasn't the marathon run until I told them it was 'race walking'. They had no idea the sport even existed. We had to look up the rules. The 'flying' offense is, if a judge visually determines your not actually walking (both feet are in the air at the same time) you get a red card.. three red cards and you are DQ'd

Gimped out running...

I agree on the racewalking...it's just...wrong, but oh well

I'd also liek to see CX, also DH mtbing.

Also half marathon and a 10km road race rather than the 10,000m on track

There was some woman on tv here the other week, who at like 59 or 60 or something had just become world pole dancing champ... she thought that it would be in the olympics soon "It won't be in the next couple of years, but it will be soon"... er...ugh.

I think CX should def be in... DH would be great as well assuming finding a mountain is no biggie.

Trials would be really great.

Not sure what I'd add but there's plenty I would take out.

Shooting: I remember when they always used to release doves during the opening (or closing ceremonies), to kid folks that the Olympics somehow made the world a safer place. Then the very next day they let part time soldiers from China, Russia, South Korea and a bunch of other one-party states, show just how good they would be at killing people. Excitement factor: 0

Synchronized swimming: aka preening in a swimming pool. You need sequins and waterproof make-up? You're not a sport buddy. No male events, why is that? Cos it's all about aesthetics. Excitement factor: 1

Judo: Wrestling in pyjamas. Looks impressive when someone gets thrown but so many bouts are a strategic bore-fest. Excitement factor: 3

Equestrian events: Outside of the participants, does anyone care? Excitement factor: 1

Weightlifting: we've got 'worlds strongest man' events, why do we need this? Guaranteed to produce dope-test failures at every games. Excitement factor:2

Sailing: again if you are not part of that world, would you give a damn? Being on a boat is one of the best ways to waste your time that I know of, absolutely wonderful. As a televised spectator sport, sinks without trace. Excitement factor: 0

Rhythmic gymnastics: Poncing about with a ribbon? I think not. Excitement factor: 2 or 10 (if you're a teenaged male).

Swimming: I don't want to see this go but there are far too many events. 400 metres team medley relays, meh. Excitement factor: 8 (maybe 10 with crocodiles).

Modern pentathlon: great fun for modern-day Dick Turpins or Errol Flynns, irrelevant to everyone else. Excitement factor: very high if The Three Muskateers is your favourite novel.

Boxing: farcical judging at every Olympics, Rio no exception. Excitement factor: 0 if you know the fix is in.

Golf: I should be happy as Team GB got gold in the mens, but let's be honest, it's just not that much fun to watch unless you play the game. If it encouraged little kids in Africa and other deprived parts of the world to get into the sport, well great. But we know that's not what golf is about. Excitement factor: 2

Baseball/Softball: It'll be back for Tokyo to keep the fans of the pro game in E. Asia happy, but I think it's been proven beyond doubt that it's not really a good fit for the Olympics. If baseball is in why not cricket? The 20-20 version is hugely popular wherever it's played. The staid Middle England image is also a thing of the past. Huge global fanbase, bigger than baseball's. Excitement factor:3

Sad to say it, but I think the Olympics is an idea that has sadly run it's course. (pun intended). It's mired in corruption, of little lasting benefit to the host nation and often a huge financial burden to the host city. Rife with cheating for the sake of national glory (just look at the petulance shown by the Chinese media when one of their swimmers was justifiably questioned about past doping offences), and really just a hostage to the demands of corporatism and the media. Not to say that this isn't true of other sports, but the IOC has always relied on a blindly idealistic and anachronistic packaging of the event that is increasingly at odds with the reality shown up on screen.
Most, if not all, the sports represented in Rio have their own World Championships or some way of deciding who the best proponents are. Great, then what need of an Olympiad?
