Here's a subject that I had been pondering about for a while... what's the backstory of your user name? Is it one you have used on several forums and just become your de facto alias? Does it have some sort of meaning or significance? Were you just bored and thought of it on the fly?

For me, my name is Jason and I used to drive a W124 chassis Mercedes. Being short sighted and frequenting car forums at the time I created this user name based on the formula used for other forums. Needless to say, I no longer own the car, nor did I even lurk the forum for 11 years.

Now I'm back and I had submitted a user name change, but the mods couldn't be bothered. C'est la vie.

I used to post on MTBR.com before coming over here. I discovered that site just as I took my first "real" job doing soil science for a consulting firm. I was going to use "Dr. Dirt" as it fit with the job and trail riding. But I don't have a PhD and felt that name would be pompous and misleading. So "Dir-T" it is for RBR and MTBR.

I use my initials or first name on the other two forums I frequent.

A Velodog was a small caliber pistol marketed to cyclists to fend off marauding dogs. I'm a gun guy who is also a cyclist so the name seemed fitting, although I'll use a water bottle on those marauding dogs.

I still have an account at MTBR, but I had no idea what I was doing at the time, "I have a mountain bike, therefore I need to post here". Not enough confidence, or dough to get into it and I felt rather intimidated by the people there. Still own that Specialized Hard Rock with the Spin wheels though... took it on a trail once back in 2011. Everyone gave me strange looks as the trail was rather technical and I went at it with a fully rigid bike (stock front fork as well).

The first roadbike I had was a 1978 Fuji Sport 10, and I thought it was trendy to register on forums using a screenname that described the gear you were using. Anyway, I built the bike up for about $100, then sold it for about $100 a year later. I bought a few other odd late-70's boom bikes before building up my current whip, a Nashbar touring bike.

No imagination here, either. My maternal grandmother's name was Kathleen. My mother's name is Kathleen. My mother's sister had a daughter a year before I was born and named her Kathleen. So my mother took something "close enough" and went with that.

I use it on all the bike boards, but for other websites I have other names. Started on the local sites, then MTBR, then moved within city limits and got a fixie so I started posting here.
