So, the co-worker asked: Where are you from? Scratched my head. I guess my accent gave it away.....I was born in Japan, lived in: CA, MA, MO, FL, AK, Germany, Spain, NC, OR.....I will, as of today call Missouri, "from". Wonderful state, Current River and OMDaredevils are a part of me now and I miss it.......Where are you from??

Chicago.

People born in the US tend to ask this a lot of each other as well as others, usually out of genuine curiosity. I stopped doing it when I was living in England. The question really pissed off British immigrants. (I thought since I wasn't from there either, it would be ok. It wasn't.)

I was always perplexed when asked this question.
"Where are you from" I take as where you were born/raised.
"Where do you live" is where you're currently residing.
If I am camping in CO for 2 months, am I residing there?

Born in Reno, Nevada. Have lived for substantial periods in northern California, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Connecticut (for the last 25 years). So I don't know where I'm from, except I still have a lot of family in Reno, and in some sense it'll always be the case, in the words of the state song, that

Home means Nevada,
Home means the hills,
Home means the sage and the pines.
Out by the Truckee's silvery rills,
Out where the sun always shines.
There is the land that I love the best,
Fairer than all I can see,
Right in the heart of the golden west,
Home means Nevada to me.

I get this occasionally. I grew up in Canada (Eh!), and had English grandparents, then a couple of overlays of living in the UK, then an overlay of East Coast US.

I used to get asked if I was English, but that has faded a bit. Often they will hear the Canadian --'Out and about in a boat'--

I guess we all share a certain curiosity--I used to try to guess the UK/Aussi/Kiwi/South African accents, but I got less good at it, so I stopped.

Ugh, I hate that question because there is a fair bit of animosity between "natives" and "newcomers" in the town where I live. Yeah, I grew up in the Poconos (northeast PA) but I've spent close to half my life in Bozeman, MT.

I once had to discipline a younger co-irker for driving at unsafe speeds on a job site (a topic for another thread. He's gone now). He said "I don't know what the roads were like in PA but I've been driving dirt roads like this one since I learned how to drive". I had to tell him "so what? I've been driving THIS VERY ROAD as part of this job since before you had a license".

Born in Queens, raised on Long Island, back in Queens w/in a few miles of where I was born, like 99.9% of humankind. Not very original!

Spent a bit of time in Buffalo and France, though. And upstate NY for school.
