After a couple years commuting on my energy sink (mtb), I've decided that a smaller big ring would allow me to "big ring it" regardless of if I'm hammering or just warming up. So I went to Sheldon's gear calculator, and figured out that replacing my 44 tooth (104 bcd, circa '99 LX, 4-bolt) big ring with a 40 tooth would be just right. Of course I'd be giving up my highest gear, and making additional redundancy with the middle ring, but I don't think it matters.

But where can I find affordale 104-40 chainrings for the 4-bolt mtb standard? I've seen some high-end ones for sixty or eighty bucks, but isn't there something more affordable?
