Do you have any suggestions on where to find discounted STEEL frame road bikes? I've checked bikesdirect.com but not very excited about their limited selection.

Was curious about the Mercier Galaxy though. Any hits on this particular bike?

I think I'd love the Surly Cross-check but can't afford it new. I working with about a $400-500 budget.

That's a tight budget. On a new frame, I think you'll make too many compromises. I would look used on Ebay (or elsewhere).
That may not be what you wanted to hear, but I that's what I would do.
