This is my poll (and experiment)!
To lose weight and get in shape.
So I dont gain weight and stay in shape.
To get away from the house.
I just spent $5,000 on this thing do you think I am goin to let it just sit there?
Ride? What are you talking about I just like the interesting people in this forum!
To meet interesting people and then drop them!
To meet interesting people then get droped!
I go crazy if I dont work out and I hate the gym in my town.
I dont know I just do!
All of the above!

To relax and clense my self of lifes daily BS.
To stay in shape so I can eat what ever the heck I want.
To meet interesting people.
To go to cool places on my bike.
To get the reaction from non cyclists "You rode how far on a bicycle?!!??!?"
To appreciate good food after being on the bike for hours eating hammer gel and power bars.

To meet interesting people and then drop them

But it always turns out to be to meet interesting people and to get dropped by them.

Hmmm... the best reason I can think of...

Nothing at the gym can replicate leaning hard into a corner trying to hold a line and praying that there's no loose gravel on the road...

Two wheels...

...are just to much fun, and can be great therapy. On the dirt, or on the road. The wheels go round and round and a lot can be left behind.

I ride

therefore I am. There are so many reasons to ride. For me, it's the best way to keep sane. When I'm around 1000 middle school kids all day, I need a break. Plus, when I'm on the bike they can't keep up with me.

It is deep seeded. It may be psychological. It may be spiritual. It may be pathological.
But, the most frightening fact that I have come to realize about "WHY I ride" is that:
"I don't know..."

Are you kidding? Take a look at where I ride - it's a crime against nature to NOT ride!!!

It's hard to define

Some times while climbing a very long steep hill, about 2 hours out I often wonder why I feel so good. It's hard to define. It feels really good to give my body a very hard workout. It's both physical and mental. I like knowing I have the discipline to push myself hard for long periods day after day. I like the way I get stronger and fitter.
I feel exhilarated during and after a ride.
I look forward to doing it again the next day. I think about the next days ride, I go over the ride lying in bed before I go to sleep, a long flat road I know I will hammer on, or a long steep hill that suddenly gets very steep, and then the next day when I get there I will remember anticipating it.

Why ride?

Because distance running is bad for you and every distance runner runs alone, even if they are in a crowd of 40,000.
Cyclists speak to one another.
You get to wear wacky clothes.
There is always something new that you need to buy for your bike.
Endorphins follow a good ride, headaches follow a good beer.
It gets me away from the office mobile phone (I'm always in an area where there's no signal)
