i understand why you would want a smaller, mud shedding platform (like crank bros) for a race that will be muddy. but pictures show some teams still used the SE speddplays, even though this past sundays paris-roubaix was dry and dusty. why not slap on the real speedplays? other than marketing for the eventual release...

I'm not sure how this solves the mud shedding problem because you still have the issue of the cleat 'hole' being filled with mud. One step in soft ground will gum up speedplay cleats enough that you'll have to spend time removing all the mud before they'll engage.

so why the design change? i thought they threw these on for mudd shedding. is it justto lighten the bike because other components are beefier and heavier?

It's not optimum but it would clear mud far better than having the pedal fill the entire cavity of the cleat. Strange that we haven't seen Speedplay convince any P/R or Flanders riders use the Frog. I guess pedals are one area pros just don't mess with once they're comfortable.
