recommendations - triple, double compact, or double - experienced MTB'r. Can grind most hills MTbing. Not a newbie to riding, but am a 40+er. Double with no bail out granny? Double compact seems like a big range of gears.

Thanks

Repeat after me - "A granny gear is for mountain bikes" I use mine on my MTB often, but you really shouldn't need one on a road bike. Especially if you already ride. Unless you live in the Dolomites you really should never have to use it.

I mountain bike often and hardly ever use my small chain ring. I still opted for a compact crank on my road bike and love it. IMHO it gives you the best of both worlds. :D
