I'm considering replacing one of our vehicles, and I'm looking for advice on which make/models to consider. Many of the cars on my short list are Subaru's, and I know there are lots of fans here, so...

Must haves:
  • good gas mileage (highway > 32)
  • all wheel drive
  • good cargo space
  • hatchback or wagon
  • under $30K (ideally, under $25K)

Nice to have:
  • manual transmission
  • sporty

I'm willing to entertain buying new or used, but no more than 3-4 years old, and under 50K miles.

The cars currently on my radar:
  • Impreza Hatchback
  • Outback
  • Forester
  • Mazda CX 5
  • VW Golf

All input/comments welcome. Thanks!

The first two must haves are mutually exclusive, except for electric cars and eclectic motorcycles. No boxer engine gets good mileage. Maybe a diesel Touareg for a premium?

Depending on how big of a priority "AWD, cargo space and wagon" is, the Subaru Outback is your most likely bet until the VW Golf SportWagen Alltrack comes stateside or if you are cross shopping CUVs as well (which you list the CX-5 and Forester).

The Forester, Impreza and Golf are all capable of 32+ highway mpg, the CX-5 and Outback will be a bit of a reach (rated 31 and 30 respectively).

Manual transmission is available on all but with a few caveats. The Outback dropped the manual in the latest version (2009-2013 models had a 6 speed manual). The CX-5 has a manual with the base engine and FWD combo.

Other suggestions I have would be the Ford Focus, VW Golf Variant, Scion/Toyota iM, or even the Mazda3.

Hope that helped more than add more confusion!

My wife has a Toyota RAV 4 and I have a Mazda3 hatchback. Her car is nice. I love my Mazda3 but most of the people my age that drive it including my wife, and brother hate it. They don't like sitting so low to the ground. The SUV effect has taken hold of people.

My brother had similar requirements a few years ago and ended up with a Legacy Wagon.

or E Class Wagon - but then not under 60k

I like the OUtback. It is actually so similar to the E class wagon in a lot of respects, ride quality and road feel very similar. But .. half the price.

wish I had got the E wagon. But I wanted the turbo V8, so got the sedan

Just bought a new Honda cr v. All wheel drive, comes in manual, and they are offering .9 percent financing for 60 months or 1.9 percent for 72 months thru Honda financing. Tons of room, really close to your price range.

I've continued researching the last few days, and the CR-V was added to my list a couple days ago.

How do you like yours?

Well this is my fifth Honda in my life lol. Last one was an Ellement. We took delivery yesterday and went for a 100 mile road trip to see what's what. My wife and I love it. Now we got the ex-l model with automatic and all wheel drive . So we are one from the top in trim line. With 1.9 financing for 72 months , I was out the door at 27,800 with Delaware tag and taxes.

And yes we love it and keep cars for 10 plus years. My ellement is still here and just turned 10. But was starting to have a few issues.

I like the Volvo V60. You'll likely need to get one used in your price range, but I think they are dead sexy when optioned properly (Polestar mmmm...).

Are Honda's "AWD/4WD" still FWD until slip is detected, then adds on the RWD? My Element is like this, and I know that their Ridgelines also shared this design philosophy.

I don't usually use the words "gorgeous" and "wagon" in the same sentence, but that one qualifies...
