All In On Disc

The new wheels retain the same rim shape as in the past, but now utilize a new Zipp 77/177D hubset that is QR - and thru-axle compatible.

The age of disc-brake-equipped road bikes has taken another leap forward with Zipp unveiling new thru-axle compatible versions of its popular 202 and 303 Firecrest wheels. Heretofore, both wheelsets were available in 6-bolt disc-brake compatible versions, but now the improvements are seen at the center of the wheel, allowing riders to take advantage of the tighter tolerances and increased steering precision of thru-axle equipped wheels.

The new Zipp 202 Firecrest carbon clincher, 303 Firecrest carbon clincher, and 303 Firecrest tubular retain the same rim shape as in the past, but now utilize a new Zipp 77/177D hubset. Claimed top line improvements include greater stiffness, durability, simplicity and versatility. Prices have also come down, with the carbon clincher versions of each wheelset running $2,400, $425 less than past versions. However, they are not tubeless compatible.

According to Zipp, the new hubs have what it calls bearing preload precision set, which means no pre-load adjustment is needed. This improves bearing protection and sealant. The hubs also include new quick-release skewers with a wider more ergonomic handle to provide more leverage for opening and closing. When closed, the lever contours neatly with the frame.

But perhaps more importantly the new hubs are thru-axle compatible thanks to the included set of thru-axle end caps that can be swapped on by hand. The front axle measures 12x100mm or 15x100mm with thru-axle installed. The rear opts for 12x135mm or 12x142mm. Stiffness is gained via a proprietary flange geometry and spoke hole attachment pattern with Sapim CX-Ray spokes that are designed to improve torsional and lateral stiffness.

Meanwhile, the new 202 Firecrest carbon clincher is 32mm deep with a max width of 25.4mm, giving this wheel solid aero efficiency with crosswind stability. To withstand the demands of gravel and adventure road riding, the wheelset is laced using Sapim brass nipples for increased stiffness and durability.

The new 303 Firecrest carbon clincher has a rim depth of 45mm and max-width of 28.5, and is available in clincher and tubular models. Each wheelset is 35 grams lighter than before, and it's the same wheel reigning U.S. national cyclocross champion Jeremy Powers and the Giant Factory Off-Road Team raced this year.

Here's a complete breakdown of specs and pricing of the new wheels, which will be available starting this month.
