Rivendell says specifically that it is NOT an all-rounder but a race specific bike.
specifically:

...some have bought it as a light versatile roadish bike with dirt capabilities. If you are 160 pounds of less, that's something you can do. If you weigh 165 or 170 or even 180, you can still DO that (ride it as a general purpose road-and-fire trail bike), but keep in mind that the Legolas is race-light, and you don't get race-light without giving up some degree of wreck-resistance.
basically....ymmv

Why consider it if that is your attitude towards the designer(s)?
1. I have a lead on one.
2. It will run big tires and fenders.
3. Grant is right about a lot of things.
4. Grant isn't always right.
5. I've heard plenty of folks have adapted cross bikes for such use.

Well I am always open to alternate uses of a bike but I'd be concerned about a real cyclo-cross bike (as this one is) that is really designed for actual race use being converted to a long distance (which means lots of hours in the saddle) ride. The top cat cyclo-cross races are usually 1 hour + 1 lap with lots of dismounts so the bikes are not intended for a lot of saddle time.

Still if the OP can pick one up for a deal that isn't so bad......

Umm, ya.. MB1 is a very, very experienced rider, and a frequent and very informative poster here... I wouldn't be quite so dismissive of what he says, particularly after you pose a completely open-ended question.
I've been reading and enjoying MB1's posts for three years. He's a smart cookie. I give him mad respects.

I've ridden a Legolas a few miles, not really enough to matter. It was nice, a typical Riv bike, but too small for me, so I couldn't really feel the details. I couldn't vouch for it for any specific purpose.
FWIW, though, I have an Atlantis and a Rambo, and I've dealt with Rivendell a lot as a customer and a journalist writing stories about cycling. They've been straight with me and always good to deal with, even before they knew I was a media kingpin.

Hey, I'm sure the previous misunderstanding was just that. It's hard to communicate. I can't imagine any disrespect was intended.

I have not ridden one. I don't think it's a crazy idea. Since MB is in DC, I will say that I beleive this really depends on "what the definition of all-around is."

I have a feeling Rcnute is after a brevet bike that he may take on trails once in a while. I suspect he wants the ability to carry a few pounds of stuff in a Carradice bag or a front bag. If that's the case, I think it's reasonable. The geometry is still laid back, and the bracket drop is a centimeter less than an Atlantis. I believe Grant kept eyelets for fenders just in case. Also, rcnute rides a pretty small frame.

If by all around, you want a touring bike, it's a bad idea. But to me it's not too far off base.

On a tenuously related theme: I use my "race specific" cross bike as a foul weather road bike. Have done this for years. It's no different than the thousands of messengers worldwide using "track-specific" frames to squirt through urban traffic on a daily basis. I have such a track bike and have ridden it for years in and around nyc without being betrayed by it's "twitchy" handling. Likewise, my cx bike (a YETI) serves me well on group and solo road rides of varying distance. If my new road frame has not arrived by May I'll be riding the CX bike from NYC to Washington DC (charity ride, not my idea!), without any reservations. The first bike I raced on a velodrome (in the mid 1980's) was my converted high tensile steel Raleigh road bike... a track bike wasn't in my teen-age budget, so I made do. If you're an experienced enough rider you can make almost anything work. I can't see any reason why the Legolas would be an exception.
