I am in need of others advice.... stuck in confusion!

Specialized Tarmac SL2
Trek Madone 6.9 Red/Pro

First what would be the choice between the two above... secondly what others would you consider?

Any help much appreciated.

For $7000 you would be nuts to buy a complete bike. If you are spending that much you should really know your stuff and know what fits. I would be going custom all the way starting with the frame and fork. I still would not end up spending near $7k. You just don't gain enough performance from the bike in my mind to justify spending much more than $4000ish. That's me though. There are so many choices. I would look at Strong, Calfee, Kirk, Moots, Rock Lobster, Steelman, and on and on. I own a Steelman and love it, I bought it ten years ago and won't ever get rid of it. Simply awesome bike. It's steel, and when I picked it up it cost about half what he is charging today. One of my customers has a Paul Sadoff/Rock Lobster that is just as detailed and Paul is charging $1200 to start for a custom, which is more reasonable for a very similar quality product. Same with Strong $1500 for a steel. If you want carbon I like Calfee, very beautiful, IMO and time tested builder.

But, if you hate research and like impulse shopping for big ticket items and want what the marketers say is the bestest go with the Specialized, they are cooler.

LOL!!!!!!

There is an Orca at my LBS with full Dura Ace 7900, 7850 cl24 carbon/alloy clinchers that is SERIOUSLY nice and about 14.5 pounds, and its just over $6 k. I think that you can get one heck of a bike for 5-6 k for an Orbea. I have a 2009 Orca with 2008 Chorus 10 speed. I liked that I could go to their website, pick what I wanted and do it the way I wanted. I would recommend the process, I was pleased with the outcome.

Jeeze! For 7k you can get a lot of bike and be prepared to use it. Which economy are you coming from!

Seven can build you up whatever you want for around that with custom frame and fork and just about everything.

So this is for recreational riding eh?

You have 7 grand and you want a Specialized or Madone?

Errr... custom is not only in your reach and your alley, it's one of a kind unlike a Tarmac and Madone.

Whats your call on the bike? I see you have several. You like your Orca?
I only have two bikes...the Orca and an Ibis Mojo mountain bike. So far I've spent just over 7K for both bikes and I'm very happy with each one.

You could spend a lot more than 7K (anything with Dura Ace Di2 on it) or a lot less (an aluminum BMC with SRAM Rival) and still have a really nice bike.

Find a bike that you love and that fits. In your price range, you're going to have an awesome bike no matter what brand you buy.

People will give you all kinds of opinions on what you should buy (carbon, steel, ti, bamboo etc) but that is what THEY want. Buy what you want and enjoy it. Keep us posted!

As long as you pass on the new Dura Ace group for 7K you can go full custom and probably still have enough left over to get a 1 - 2K "beater" or rain bike.
You've got that right. At that price point I'd buy a custom bike and a rainy day bike when you can't bear to get your honey all splattered. A Salsa Casseroll Triple would make a perfect do everything rainy day bike. You can get a Casseroll for less than $1500 and have $5500 for your dream stead.

I worked in a shop from 91 to 96 and road bikes weren't selling, but TREK had a gary fisher all pimped out - I think it was $3,500. We laughed at any fool who bought that bike. I think you might be in that club - sorry to say.

Im not in any club. Looking for advice as I would give it in the MT Bike world. I ride a GF Hi-Fi Pro... .Love it. Don't know much about road bikes. I plan on doing some racing as well.

Why is it everytime you post on any forum someone has to dog on someone looking for simple advice which is very much appreciated.

Here is a bike Im considering.... buy used?

Yep! You should start a new thread:
"Which TWO bikes would you buy for $7000, 'main and rain'?"

My main would be 2009 Orbea Orca with SRAM Red and EDGE carbon clinchers ($6000) for my 'main' bike and a bone stock Van Dessel Country Road Bob ($1000) for my 'rain' do it all bike.

Are talking specifically about me?

Anyway, look, if you are going to tun out and spend 7k retail on a bike - then you should dang well know what you want and feel confident in what you want. Not go to some internet site and ask a bunch of strangers for their opinion. My bike is less than 3 grand and I'm perfectly happy with my purchase. Looks nice, weighs not too much, is backed by a good warranty and keeps me happy. I would argue you don't need a 7k bike, if you do, fine, go out and drop that kind of cash, but do you really expect a bunch of people, all of whom you don't know, to go and tell you what type of bike to buy at 7k? I would also argue the dealer you buy from is just as important, if not more so than the actual bike. Are they going to give you good service? How are they with warranty returns? Will they take you out and give you pointers - if so are they any good? What about fit? Will they help you there? Can you swap stems, possible crank length - the list goes on and on and on.

However, you really want to know, fine, then go buy a custom Independent Fabrication, put Campy Chorus or record on it and Mavic wheels. Put Ksyriums or Cosmics or get the ti or steel - Mix and match, I don't care, cause you're not going to go faster.

How's that?
