I am building a wheel with the PowerTap Pro SL hub, but I'm not sure which rim to use. The Velocity Aerohead and the DT Swiss R1.1 rims look like good options. I weigh 72kg/160lbs. Would a 24H Aerohead rim be durable for my weight? What about a 28H DT Rim. Which wheel would be more reliable?

Thanks,
Andrew

Velocity

Go with the Velocity Aerohead OC, as that will significantly improve the strength of the wheel. However, if you break a spoke, just about any 24h wheel will immediately become unrideable. If you want to improve that situation, something like a Velocity DeepV will be a lot more solid. About 100 gm heavier than the Aerohead, but a lot stronger for a low spoke count wheel.

afaik the Velocity Aerohead OC is only available in 28h and higher. if this is a training wheelset, just go with 32h on the rear. I do not think that a 24h rear aerohead (OC or not) would be suitable for your weight. a 24h deep v, yes. people make race wheels out of Powertap hubs by lacing them to Zipp rims or similar, and I can see the point, but I don't think that's cost-effective for most people.

I was not aware that DT made a 24h rim; it's probably light, skimpy, and expensive, but will work well regardless. Your other options are thus: Sun, Ritchey (including an OCR, I think), IRD (lightest by far), and Velocity. I've built on Sun (ME14) and Ritchey (Aerosumpthinorother), and know several skinny blokes who ride IRD Cadence rims (395g!!) on their mtb 29ers.

Oh, and Mike at www.oddsandendos.com can get you pretty much anything you need, and is the cheapest I've ever seen for spokes of any kind. He carries the aforementioned Sun and IRD rims, too; they can be seen on his website.

I'd forget the Aeroheads, as they have no eyelets. If you want a 24-spoke wheel I would go with perhaps FiR SRG30 (www.redroseimports.com) or the DT 1.1. Many people in Richmond ride the SRG30 rims and are very pleased with them, and they come in lots of different colors, but anodized and not powdercoated like the Aerohead. I've ridden both on the track and like the FiR much better.

This is not a reason to "forget the Aeroheads." I've built several wheels with Aeroheads, and the fact that they have no eyelets is not an issue for either the build, performance, or durability. Now, the fact that they're not available in 24 (doh!) is a bigger problem :)

Well... I originally said 28H DT or 24H Velocity, but now my options are more limited. PT SL hubs are way back-ordered so I'm getting what my LBS has in stock. So it will be a 32H hub. Now the question is: which rim for 32H? Velocity Aerohead OC? DT R1.1? OP?
I'm leaning towards R1.1

Thanks,
Andrew

well, the standard aerohead is available in 24h. it would make a good front wheel for a light person.
