I would like to run a small chainring for the big climbs. I could buy a complete compact crank set. But would I have to change my D A 10 bottom bracket? I am running a FSA 38 tooth small ring now. Thanks for the help. Don't even mention a triple.

38 tooth is the smallest ring you can run on a 130 BCD (bolt circle diameter). If you want a 34 or 36 tooth you would need a compact crank w/ a smaller BCD spider.

Not firsthand knowledge, but...

... I recall reading somewhere that the external BB's are cross-compatible. So get a FSA K Force compact and I believe that you may be in business. As a caveat, I would check before you buy.

On the other hand, the external BB's are going for like $30-$35. Personally, IF I was doing this I'd get the FSA Mega Exo BB with the K Force crank and just ebay the entire D/A crank/BB as a set.

Another approach is to get a 12-27 cassette and keep the crank configuration as-is. I'd do that as I am not a believer in the compact fad.

fwiw...

I got a new bike and switched out a triple for a 50/34 and I didn't like the 34. The 16 tooth jump in the chainrings was too big imo. Whenever I downshifted I had to make 2-3 shifts on the rear sprocket or I'd be spinning like crazy. I put on a 36 and it's much more acceptable. You give up a little bit on the bottom end, but not much. I have a whole FSA system that uses a 110 mm bolt pattern.

If you just look at your current setup, you will easily see that it is physically impossible to mount a smaller chainring - the bolt holes on a 38 are nearly out in the teeth of the chainring. There is simply no way to build a smaller chain ring where the chain would not be hitting the chainring bolts. A compact is your only option, and since there is no DA compact, to my knowledge, you will have to look at another brand of crank set and that means another brand of bottom bracket.
