What are some fairly affordable (i.e. >$150) mountain shoes that are wide(r) in the toe area? The current cheap Exustar shoes I have rub against the side of my foot on the small toe side
Lake MX235-X. These are widest shoes I've found. For work boots, I take a 9.5 EEE. These fit me perfectly. Instead of just being wide at the forefoot, then narrowing back down at the toe, these remain nice a roomy from the forefoot to the toe. I bought a pair of these directly from the Lake website and used them for commuting five days a week since September and have had no problems. They're wider than the Specialized, Carnac, Sidi, and Northwave shoes I've used before.
They have a very stiff carbon sole, very grippy tread, no heel slip, and are quite light. The materials are very sturdy with nice soft leather in the right areas, and hardshell plastic covering the heel to keep its shape and deal with skuffs. The top of the foot area is especially nice because there's no pressure at the top of the foot. It's a nice soft leather with a thin, dense padding instead of a high loft padding that just gets compressed.
Jensen has them on sale for $108.

Make sure you are looking at the wider version MX235-X not MX235C.
I liked the pair I bought so much I bought a second pair from Jensen. The pair they sold even had some improvements. The ratchet buckle release was redesigned for a lower profile, so it can't get caught on things, and the inner liner covers more of the inside.

Sidi Mega Dominators

I've bought two pair in the last few years from Sierra Trading. One for under $100USD and another for about $139USD. I'm an E width and also liike a decent sized toe box. The Mega size gives both along with excellent quality.

Agree on the Shimano

I'm primarily a road rider and for the last two years have been riding Shimano 215E, original version and Gen II. I bought the Gen I's on EBay for $50, the Gen II on close out for $90. Also recently bought a pair of 220E Shimano's for $150. As LS notes, they're great shoes. Well made and for my feet, a great fit.

Using the above mentioned Shimano and love them.
I paid 155.00 for them.
There is nothing worse than ill fitting shoes on a long mtn bike ride.
Good luck

I have crazy wide feet. Sidi Megas fit the bill. They are the first shoes I've ever had that fit really well.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I've looked at Sidi Mega Dominators but around here (Vancouver) they're pretty expensive, around $220-$250 CDN. I'm on a pretty tight budget. Those Lakes and Shimanos are looking pretty good

I never thought that riding a bike could cause foot blisters.. I'll be glad to get a new pair of shoes
