Slightly off topic, but thought I'd ask here instead of starting a new thread on tubulars. I've just gotten back to riding tubulars on a regular basis and had a flat last week when a staple puntured an almost new Sprinter Gatorskin. Rather than toss it, I'm going to repair a tubular for the first time in over 30 years. Bought a new repair kit, opened up the tire, etc., etc.

My question is: What glue/adhesive are most of you using to secure the rim strip to the repaired tire after its restitched? The Velox kit I bought only has the glue for the patch. From what I've read, either carpet glue or shoe repair glue is suggested, but thought I would see what's popular with this group. Thanks for your help and wish me luck......

I use rim cement - the rubbery kind; not the red stuff that dries hard. I work it into the stiching to help weather proof the stitching and to help lock the knots.

An 800g wheelset is a pretty good reason to switch back. ;-P But I don't think I'll do it unless I give in to the temptation and give Nick the go ahead to do a 600g Crumpton frame for me.

A good glue job with Vittoria Mastik 1 is a pain to remove and I had to destroy a few dugast tires to get them off the rim. But it's a choice of rolling a tire in a corner or blowing some money and that's not a hard choice. I generally just used a 4mm hex wrench, worked it under the tire at a spoke hole and then rolled it like a sardine can key until i got enough loose to grab it and peel it off.

Best is Barge cement. Comes in a tube. Usually found at Home Depot, but almost always at a decent neighborhood hardware store. It sticks better and remains flexible better than anything else, and isn't affected by rim cement or the solvents thereof.
