I have the Shimano two hole road shoes (not MTB shoes, but have ridges on the edges which allows for easy walking). I use the with Crank Bros Candy pedals with them and couldn't be happier. Easy walking. great float, very reasonable weight, what's not to like?

Requirements

I may need to clarify a bit, my question is not intended to sound like I will be doing a lot of walking in cleats, I am more concerned about short walks inside of stores and the like. When looking at the cleats, they just look very awkward. I hope not to have to do longer walks, like mechanical problems. I did not realize that cleat covers are needed for short walks to convenience stores and pit stops.
Cleat covers are not required, but they make walking a lot easier and they make your cleats last a lot longer. The issue is the same whether it is Speedplay or Look. I ride with people with all kinds of cleats and they all walk funny in the convenience store. Those who use cleat covers walk a little better (and quieter).

I'm confused. I use Speedplay Zero's and never had a problem walking in them or fouling with dirt. Maybe the X models foul up but never had a problem with Zero's. All my buddies have Shimano pedals and I have an easier time walking in my Speedplays than they do (they look like they're walking like a duck).

I sometimes use coffee shop caps and just ordered a pair of the Keep-On-Covers. The reason is to protect the cleats and keep the screw heads from getting worn down (it's a PITA to remove the screws when they get worn down).

The best part about Speedplay's is being two sided. I step into mine and I'm off and riding, I look back and my buddies are looking down at their Shimano's trying to get them right side up so they can get clipped in. I just shake my head (wondering why you would want to deal with that) and keep riding. I eventually slow down and let them catch up :p

I should be more clear. My Shimano shoes are the SPD sport touring. Check the under sole pics using google. The cleat is recessed, but the shoe is a road shoe (...ish). Super easy walking. Compatible with the excellent Crank Bros Candy pedals.

There are also Keep-on Kovers which accomplish the same thing as the cafe covers, except you never have to take them off. I love mine.
The Keep-on-Kovers look like a good protector, but if you are walking at a rest stop that that has dirt/gravel does it keep it out of cleat area ?

I assume these work with X-series as well.

I been using this method for cleat protection with coffee caps for a number of years

I have a wood Laminate flooring in my house and I can tell you that Speedplay pedals are deadly to it. The outside corner metal part of the cleat dug into the floor and did some serious damage to it. So know I wear cleat covers when ever I'm in the house.

What's the problem. I was able to put down a nice, even texturing on my outside patio deck wearing my Speedplay cleats walking on it. Took several years, but the signature double dent impressions now completely cover the wood.

Bonus, it makes the deck less slippery in the winter...

Keep on covers for Speedplay are great. Also help slot the pedal into the cleat.

Picture of my Keep On covers. Got them on eBay for $19.95

The same pedals do not work for everyone. I started with clipless pedals and the original Looks in 1984 and used everything since then. Only recently went to Speedplays.
Shimano are built like a tank. Look, not so much plus their cleats wear quickly. But at least they are cheap. Neither has very good float. They basically twist on their axis and nothing laterally.
I was a longtime Time user but the self recentering bothers me and I think is bad for my knee. Also not nearly as much float as Speedplays. Plus if you twist on the axis then you get even less lateral float.
Speedplay's eliminated my knee pain especially with my trashed knee. I'm still amazed by that. No more icing my knee after a ride and no more ibuprofen. That's worth the fussy cleat setup and regreasing and lubing and cleat covers. Easily worth it.
I use the Keep on Covers so I never have to take them on and off and it funnels the pedal right into the cleat.
I had multiple professional fits on Shimano's, Looks, and Times over the years btw. In the last few years I've used Shimano Dura-Ace, Look Blades, and Time iClic 1 and 2's.
I don't care about weight within reason and most people who do probably shouldn't. Durability is far more important to me.
