I recently sold my SUV and bought a Lexus IS250. I'd like to buy a bike carrier, but I'm worried about scratching my car. I also have a truck, so I'll only carry my bike with my car 2 or 3 times per month. I'll only carry one road bike at a time. A friend recommended the Saris Bones 3 bike carrier. Do you guys have any experience with that carrier? Do you recommend any others? Thanks.

I have had a bones rack for about 15 years. It is a nice rack. However, it (and all other trunk racks) still touches the paint. So, there is a risk of scratching paint.

If you are only using it a couple times a month, I would opt to removing both wheels and putting the bike in the back of the car. Get one of the canvas 9'x12' painting drop cloths. That will protect the car interior and not risk paint scratches. Plus, a bike in the car is safer than a bike on the back of the car.

That's a good point. I sell pharmaceuticals in hospitals, and would like to taken bike when I travel. So, I'm a little nervous about leaving it on the carrier in hospital parking lots. I'll take the wheels off tmro and see if it fits. My trunk is pretty small.

Get a hitch and hitch rack that is easily converted between class I/II and class III

I like my Saris Bones, too, but for your uses I agree with the suggestion to put it in the trunk. I'd be very suprised if it didn't fit with the wheels off. I used to frequently carry my bike in the trunk of a Ford Taurus sedan. I bought a couple pieces of foam carpet padding to put between the wheels and the frame to prevent damage. Worked fine.
