After removing this cassette from my bike I dropped it and all the spacers and gears got totally mixed up on the garage floor. My question is: How can I get this thing back together again the way it was? I don't know where the individual spacers go and I don't know if there are two sides to the gears when installing them.

Thanks.

The cogs will only go on the hub one way, if you have them backwards they won't go on. I always line up the smallest spline on the hub with the smallest spline on the cog for assembly. do that and if it won't slide on after some jiggling, flip it. On shimano cassettes the numbers are stamped on each cassette on the outboard side (not sure about Sram).

There are spacers built into the pre-assembled cog-sets including a spacer at the small end. After putting the pre-assembled cog-sets on the hub, put the biggest loose cog on next, then a spacer, then the next largest cog on and so forth. Don't add a spacer between the first free cog and the pre-assembled cog set, or between pre-assembled cog-sets. The last couple cogs have a spacer built into the cog so you don't need one for those. When done, you should have the same spacing between each cog which is easy to see from visual inspection. If you see 2 cogs together with no space, or extra space, you messed up.

If you get everything together and count the gears, there should be 11, if there is 10, look under the couch.

This should be posted in https://forums.roadbikereview.com/components-wrenching/ for obvious reasons.

As others have posted it's pretty much impossible to screw it up. Put the cogs on in order, put spacers where needed...all you have to do is look and you'll know if it's correct. The smallest 2-3 cogs have a spacer built in. If you'd taken a quick look at the cogs and the splines you'd know they can only go on one way.

It seems when ever I post a question on these bicycle sites, perhaps a stupid question to the "experts", I get compared to an idiot. It's really a shame. I have limited places to go for information unless I drive 40 miles one way. The bike shop in my area won't give me the time of day unless I buy something. They make me feel as though I'm bothering them.

Anyway thanks and I don't have a couch in my garage. I won't be back to read any response should there be any. I wonder if there is a bike site that treats people with a modicum of respect as a human being and doesn't indicate a symptom of idiocy.

Nobody compared you to an idiot.

Please don't take offence (or is it too late for that?), but an amazing number of bike-tech questions can be resolved by the user through simple observation. Bikes are mostly not that complicated. In this example, you could have just picked up one of the cogs and tried to put in on the freehub. You would have immediately realized that there is only one way they can go on. Likewise, you could have compared the spacers and realized they were all the same thickness. It's an apparently lost skill that should be a base case action for any bike rider trying to figure out a technical problem.

What's with the run of newbies on this site and they all seem to so sensitive..... geeeezzzzzzz

You, You, You IDIOT!
That's it! I can't take this constant abuse one more second. I'm running off to find the butt pampering cycling forum. I may just start my own. lovefestcyclingforums.com, you will need a note from your mommy promising you'll play nice. I'll get a bunch of retired home-ec teachers to mod. Don't even bother trying to join you bully.
