I had a bike fit and was recommended a Trek Domane SL5 as my existing frame is to small. It was suggested that I either buy a 56 or 58 size as both could be adjusted to my needs.

I've found a 56 and have been advised to check the following...can anyone shed any light on this?

'I'm confident that we could make either work but definitely check how many spacers are under the stem before you buy a 56 just in case. Ideally we need 50mm. From memory I am pretty sure that's how they come. The other key factor is that it has a normal stem not an integrated one.'

Thank you!

If your buying new at a bike shop, you will discuss this with the sales person, he or his boss will be able to verify this requirement.
If you are buying used, this is a big issue as the previous owner may have cut the top of the fork off that would mean you would not be able to install a 50mm spacer under the stem. If the bike has an integrated stem, then that bike would not be for U, unless you have a lot of $$ to start replacing expensive parts.

Shed light on what? What is your question?

The SL5 has an integrated stem (not integrated bars).

Hi Duriel. Thank you for your reply. It's a used Trek Domane 2023 (SL5). No alterations have been made to it from new and it is not integrated.
The 2023 SL5 uses the Bontrager RCS Pro stem.
It's an integrated stem

Integrated elegance
The RCS Pro Blendr Stem is a sleek alloy stem offering all of the performance you crave, with looks to match. Specifically designed for use with model year 2023 Domane SL, SLR, and RSL bikes, this stem fits seamlessly with the headset top cap to provide ultimate integrated elegance. A flush mount top cap, under-stem cable routing cover, and Blendr compatibility further add beauty and sophistication.

If the stem is integrated, and you need something different like length or angle, can one put a standard stem on and get rid of the old one? I didn't know they were separate items, I though they came as a set stem/bars integrated.
The seller should be able to send you a picture detailing the stem/bar situation at the top of the tube, that would lead to more precise comments. With a picture from the side, you should be able to determine if a 50mm spacer is installed or could be added.

Possibly. Some mfgs have adapter frame caps. I don't know about this one.

It's confusing.
An Integrated stem is integrated into the frame (either to be aero or hide cables)

Integrated bars are integrated to the stem.

Then I guess there's totally integrated where the bars and stem are integrated together and with the frame. Don't know WTF they're called.

Looks like you already have 40 mm of spacers under the stem, but you only have a 5 mm spacer above the stem, so you can’t add any more spacers below the stem. But it looks like your stem has 7 degrees of rise. See if Bontrager has an integrated stem with 13 or 17 degrees rise, that would get you much closer to where you need to be.

Begs the question: why is your fitter telling you you should buy an SL5 when you need 2inches of spacers and a raised stem?

You should be looking at different bikes. The geometry is too aggressive for you
The fitter advised the geometry of the Domane is suitable for me. The 56 having a better reach and the 58 better for height. Both could be adapted.

I understand that. And wondering why. "why is your fitter telling you you should buy an SL5 when you need 2inches of spacers and a raised stem?

Agree with tlg – I cant understand why you would have to compromise on reach or stack height - a suitable bike recommedation would be one size and one frame geometry, not two that are compromised in either reach or stack. The idea of buying a bike that requires 5cm of spacers in addition to a positive rise stem, or going with a stem that's too short on the larger size doesn't make any sense.

Question: Does your bike fitter work for a bike shop? It sounds like they're trying to sell you a bike that they have in stock, not a bike that really fits you.

Good question.
A good bike fitter would give you a few options of bike brands/models that should work for you.
It seems odd to get a suggestion of one bike... in two sizes to shoe-horn you into.
