With the recent snows keeping me off the streets I finally broke out the trainer. I have a Performance TravelTrac + fluid trainer (the one with the 5 position adjustable resistance) that has served me well for several years. On a few rides this year I have noticed a curious thing: the resistance is really low for the first 10-15 minutes and then kicks in to the usual level. No leakage or other signs of trouble. So far, not too bothersome, since I spend the first 10 minutes or so doing some light warm-up spinning.
So, what is inside the resistance unit that would cause the resistance to suddenly kick in? Does anyone know how these things work? Maybe I'll try draining the oil and replacing it. Does anyone know what they use (please, no random guesses)? No, I'm not going to buy a new trainer....
