OR tights under bibs?

Not sure what the protocol is?

Assuming that the tights have no chamois.

I have always worn tights over bibs but I see alot of really good riders doing it the other way around, not sure why.

How 'bout bib tight w/o, over bibs, with base layers inbetween.

(no bathroom breaks)

Bibs under tights!

The bibs have the chamois for padding on the skin. They also get the sweat, so you won't have to wash the tights after every ride. The tights are also cheaper to replace, so wear 'em on the outside to protect the bibs!

They also look better!

The reason why some people wear their tights under their bibs is that the bibs keep them up.

IME, tights w/o shoulder straps tend to sag and fall down. Putting them under the bibs keeps them up.

Is it the way they were intended to be worn - no, but it does make some sense.

You must wear tights under bibs and, while riding slow this winter, explain ad nauseum how you are building "base miles" for next season.

I built my base miles in my 30's. I've been coasting for a couple decades now. What if they're bib tights or you don't have bibs, just shorts? It's all so confusing.

Shorts? Not bibs? Shorts? Please! We're roadies, not a bunch of short-wearing ragamuffins. :p

That's a great way!

And bib tights are expensive, and may prevent you from taking a p*ss break! :frown2:

Back in the old days, we used to wear suspenders, but haven't seen any of those in years. I still use a very old pair on my tights. They've stretched about 2 feet, so I"m about at the limit of their adjustability. They're not as comfortable as bibs, but they do the job. Your idea is more practical.

Use it or lose it, baby!

I know you're joking about "coasting for a couple of decades." No doubt you're finding out that the older you get, the less you can coast!

As topflightpro, as ANY topflightpro would tell you, wear whatever bibs you have over the other, to hold it up! Questions of hipness are only tangentially related.

I buy tights with chamois. For me, it's just too much hassle to wear shorts or bibs as a base layer. I've tried it many times and it always feels uncomfortable to me. Also because the shorts are relatively slippery the tights tend to slide down in the back. When I stop for lights I always have to pull them up. I'll spend the extra couple of bucks for the chamois.

As others have mentioned, there's a big advantage to having the bibs on top (to hold everything up).

Once that's decided, what's the best setup? I prefer, under, padded shorts, and, on top, unpadded bibs. Unfortunately the latter seem fairly rare, and I haven't found any (at a reasonable price, say under $100) that fit my 6 3 frame.

(I don't see any advantage of the under layer also being bibs; plus that can make some mid ride nature calls more awkward.)

BTW, this arrangement gives you the option of removing the bibs mid ride, if if should warm up too much.

Bibs UNDER tights.
Bibs OVER leg warmers

The riders you see with tights/knickers under bibs are wearing leg/knee warmers. Or they really are wearing tights underneath and have a [soon to be] burning ass.

Bibs under Tights with chamois next to skin.
Bibs over Leg Warmers, again with chamois next to skin.

I prefer Bibs/Leg Warmers: Less bulk, stay in place better, and easier temperature control.
