derailleur hanger alignment Gauges... are they worth the investment?

I have seen the Campy tool used on my steel frames in the past. Forgive me, but how is the procedure different, if indeed it is at all, with a carbon frame? Is it just the replaceable alloy derailleur hanger that is being "bent"? How do you avoid damaging the carbon stays?

The same way you avoid damaging steel stays.
So the leverage from the tool does not impact anything further than the derailleur hanger itself? I know that having to bend it into alignment is a very delicate operation. Just left it to the LBS when my steel frames were aligned and probably would do the same with my carbon frame.

Thanks for the education everyone. I think my confusion is because I go back to the steel frames with forged dropouts that are brazed into the stays.

It took quite a tug on the Campy tool to realign that type of dropout.
