I rebuilt a bike (~1989 Trek 1400) for a friend over the weekend using some old Shimano 5500 series 105 components.

Everything works well, but I am concerned about about how the cable is routed after the bottom bracket guide up to the front derailleur. The bare cable is rubbing on one of the hinge (not sure if that is the right term). Is this normal? I can not find any other way to route the cable to prevent this (I am worrying about the cable fraying over time). The derailleur is shifts good, so I am not sure it is really a problem.

Here are a couple of pics (chain on big ring & small ring) to show what I am talking about.

Anyone have any suggestions? Or is it fine as it is?

Thanks!

Over the plastic

Would the cable rest on the plastic cover over the derailleur spring? That would be where I would route it if it would stay there.

I guess it is kind of hard to tell from the pictures, but it does when on the big chainring, but when it is shifted to the small chainring it comes off & rubs against it.

I zoomed in as best I could and I think you have the cable attached below the leverage tang/groove on the FD arm rather than over it.

Check this out. The FD they show has a bigger tang but you should get the point. The 105 FD has a groove in the FD arm. The cable should rest in it. Your picture appears to have it slipped off. It's slight but it will cause the cable to route a bit further in towards the seat tube.
