SRAM Rival 10 sp versus 11 sp mechanical shifters: form factor breaking from the hoods

Hi all

I have got SRAM 10 speed on 3 bikes (commuter, bike in the Alps and bike in the UK).

I will retire my bike in the Alps and the UK bike (Wilier GTR) will be shipped to the Alps.

I was lucky and a few weeks ago I bought one of the last brand new Argon 18 Gallium Pro rim brake frame sets from a shop in London.

Now. I ordered 10 sp Rival shifters from Wiggle (in order to stock up for the next 10 years I already have another unused set in my cupboard). But I also ordered 11 sp Rival shifters.

Why not going 11 speed. My crankset will be Rival 53/39 and I tested it with a new 11 sp chain and I cannot tell a difference. Fully compatible to a Rival 10 sp crank.

However, I was surprised about the bulkiness of the 11 sp mechanical Rival shifters.

I have got 365 days (free returns) to make up my mind either go 11 sp or stay with 10 sp on my new Argon 18 Gallium Pro for the next few years.

1. Is it possible to shift from the hoods with 11 sp Rival shifters?
2. Even 13 years ago the 10sp Red shifters had the same form factor as the new Rival 11sp shifters. But the 10 sp Rival (and Apex) where a bit smaller.

I can only imagine the beefier lever is better for braking with rim brakes from the drops and this is what racers wanted (who often will opt for Red?)?

Another theory of mine. If you use the 11 sp Rival shifters with mechanical disc brakes you also need a longer lever for leverage and braking force.

With the 10 sp Rival shifters I can brake from the hoods with 2 fingers (of course in the Alps I am tucked down in my drop position but for riding along I often brake from the hoods) and the 11 sp Rival mechanical is more like a 3 finger brake?

I hated my bulky 10 sp Shimano 105 shifters from 2007 to 2022 (that I had on my commuter before I switched to Rival 10 sp). The braking force from the drops were amazing but breaking from the hoods nearly impossible (and I am a weight lifter).

What was wrong with 10 sp Rival shifters and why did SRAM change the form factor for 11 sp?

3 rd theory of mine with respect to 10sp Red (now the 11sp Rival) and 10sp Rival from say 10 years ago that cyclocross racers (who often had SRAM) even back then had different requirements and wanted the shape of the 10sp Red shifters.

Why would you 'engineer' 2 kind of shifters within the same 10 speed range.

Mechanically they are more or less similar.

The problem is I am not in a club and also where I work I don't think I have ever seen anyone commuting on a SRAM groupset. I could have asked someone who has 11sp mechanical running on his/her bike if I can test it how it feels.

Oh my God cxwrench.

I thought when I come back to roadbikereview after many years you are history.

Obviously not.

I do not know what is driving you. You always come across as very unfriendly character.

But please look out for another one you can bully on roadbikereview. And this is not me do you understand that.

(If someone knows if we have an ignore function on roadbikereview please let me know).

You're kidding, right? 'Bully'? I guess you being from the UK changes the definition of things a bunch. I'm just saying that you seem to be thinking about an issue that really doesn't have the answer you're looking for. Things change over time, development happens. It's nearly always because those doing the developing think the new thing is better than the old one. If you do somehow manage to get a realistic answer to your question will it change anything?
There is an 'ignore' function on here, a quick search and you'd find it.
