Hello
About a week ago, I started experiencing this strange popping sensation right under my kneecap with each pedalstroke on my road bike. The first one hundred or so strokes I do just fine, but after that I start feeling a little bit of pain. I ride MTB four times a week, and occasionally I'll switch to road on the weekends. My seat seems to be properly adjusted. Has anyone else had this problem, and how can I fix it?

You need to have a specialist look at it.

Likely a small tear in the miniscus, but there is no way anyone can diagnose this over the internet..
Nah, I figure if someone wants medical advice from an unqualified source on the internet then I’ll give him some. It’s clearly elephantitis. Or maybe the clap. If not those then it’s adult onset cat scratch fever.

Agree on both.

Given popping every pedal stroke, I can't see riding making this better, and very likely it will make whatever is wrong worse. Proper diagnosis and rehab will be the quickest way back to riding regularly.

OP, your description does sound like a meniscus tear. You probably have some other symptoms off the bike. Google it.

Most meniscus tears require surgery to repair. Mine did. I "lived" with it for several months hoping it would heal. Nope. Got it scoped and was back to normal almost immediately; just required some time for swelling to go down.

Also Google "bucket handle meniscus tear". That's what I had and it sucked and will probably suck some more in coming decades.

I don't know if putting off surgery of a minor tear is likely to increase your chances of having a BHMT but if it does, you would be smart to prevent that.

But yeah, it's probably the clap.

if you suffered no trauma (collision or such) it could be something in your bike has changed, i.e. cleats or pedals, see a specialist and if they see nothing major see a good bike fitter.
I had a torn meniscus scoped in December and I can ride now pain free (with diminished power) but I am no where near back to pre tear days. I was told I can start jogging but even now my knee is rather unstable. I'm over 50 so that may be a factor.

Did you suffer a trauma that caused yours or was it simply over-use? I’m just curious how these tears come about from just cycling assuming no trauma and no bike fit problems.

For instance, in my case, I ride three different bikes regularly but they’ve had the same set up for years. I very rarely experience any kind of knee pain. Assuming a rider is in this situation and doesn’t experience trauma or a wrong bike set-up, it is possible or even likely that they could go a whole lifetime without such a tear?

Even more insidious I am afraid. Knee popping is often false diagnosed as BB creaking. Oddly, many believe that a BB creaking is knee popping and visa versa.

The kicker is...many times knee popping and BB creaking has the same remedy. Tighten a loose skewer. If you have through axles, all bets are off.

Hope that helps.

In bold. Yes possible. Early Ethiopian cyclists of the 1200's who had their version of the TdF and it was said they had no knee popping. Wild conjecture how this could be. Many sited their low body weight. Some thought it was diet which was mostly sea weed.

yeah, i got nutmegged by a 12 year old lass and on grass my feet would pivot but we were playing in a gym and my shoes were too grippy and my knee pivoted. Hurt quite a bit.

I think wear happens anyway buy tears are typically a result of trauma, but WTFWIK, I'm no Doctor.

Lots of reasons. Hereditary factors play a large part too. If you have a family history of osteoporosis arthritis as I do [emoji53]. Your knees can wear out faster. Also crashing on to your knee can cause trauma which will not manifest until much later as microscopic tears in the meniscus can take time to get to a point where it causes instability in the knees. I sure did crash a few times . Scheduled for a check up with the bone dude next week. [emoji12]

It always amazes me that, having a health issue that they can not fix, some people would rather ask for the opinions of a bunch of random yahoos online rather than consulting with a medical professional who actually KNOWS how to fix their problem...

Some have said it’s the meniscus, I say something else. I have osteo and rheumatoid arthritis in both knees and multiple tears in each meniscus. I have a SHARP stinging pain when the meniscus is disturbed. Other than that, both knees just give out(not at the same time)and/or go out of alignment when laying down.
