Hi all,
My bike has a shimano claris compact groupset, with the exception of the crank, which is a stock FSA tempo square taper 50/34 (and the brakes, which are bb7 disc, not that that's relevant to this!)
It started life as a 2014 giant revolt 2, and because I like the frame I've been slowly upgrading the components over the last year or so. I would now like to upgrade the original crankset and bottom bracket, and I have been trying to determine whether I can use a newer, 11 speed crankset without changing the claris front derailleur and 8 speed chain.
I'm mostly wondering because there are some good deals on 105 5800 cranksets to be had at the moment. I am also open to suggestions - if there's a more sensible crankset upgrade to be made, please let me know!
I have read quite a few related threads, including on this forum, and the only issue I have identified is that the 8 speed chain may fail to shift properly because of the reduced spacing on the 11 speed crankset. However, there are mixed messages out there on this, and i'm struggling to come to a clear conclusion.
Would this be a problem, or would the 105 5800 upgrade work? (If this would be an issue) then would going for a slightly older 10 speed crankset help?
Many thanks
