This is the second time now its happened.. Last weekend as well..

I ride during the week about 10 miles, 50 minutes.. NO problem.. I also ride usually around 4 or 5pm....

On Sat and or Sun, I ride longer distance with my friend, 25-30+ miles 2+ hours..

At 1.5 hours, like last time, I get massive MASSIVE heart burn... Sometimes I think its a heart attack.. but I keep going and usually we push it harder during the end (last 7-10 miles or so)

Here is what I ate before the ride..

1 egg over easy, 1 piece of toast
1 cup of coffee, 2 equals 2tsp of NON dairy creamer..

My friend thinks it might be the creamer..

I never have heart burn during the week, nor do I while I ride during the week, but it happens when I ride this duration.. And usually when I start pushing myself does the heart burn take effect...

So an opinions???

I'd go see a doctor sooner rather than later. Is that egg and toast your entire breakfast? Do you eat anything during the rides on which you get heartburn?

Just as an aside: It's hard for me to see why anyone interested in fitness and health would put Equal or a non-dairy creamer into their body. But that's just me, and I'm not saying that this stuff has anything to do with your problem. I'm not a doctor.

/w

Seems like it would be pretty easy to test the creamer- either skip it or go for a dairy-based creamer before your next w/e ride.
Alternately, you could buy a small pack of Prilosec OTC and use it for a few days and see if that helps or eliminates the "heartburn".

Go for a doctor - it may be a sign of a heart disease (especially as it occurs by riding longer and harder than usually).

WELL THAT'S GOD DAMN SCARY!! RIGHT THERE!!

No heart disease in my family AT ALL!! Actually, no one in my family every died of a heart attack.. And I'm talking all the way to great grand parents..

My entire breakfast was 1 egg, 1 toast, the coffee and an apple..

Then 10 minutes later I started to ride..

BTW last week, my friend and I stopped during our ride at a 7-11, I bought tums and ate a banana...
It went away... Wouldn't that be a sign it was just heartburn and NOT heart problems??

You find it hard to see how equal and non dairy creamer is bad for someone into health and fitness?? Please explain.. As with equal I am not taking in any sugar and its 0 ZERO calories..

I have 2 packets a day, so anything said about how its bad for you should be completely moot..

As for the non dairy creamer?? Well again, much less calories than if I used real cream.. Let alone the fat.. And dairy fat IMO is one of the worst fats to have..

What are you using to cook the egg? Plain toast or buttered/margarine?

That is about 250 calories and in the span of 10 minutes, I think it is a bit short to enter into a high output activity. Coffee for both me and the Mrs. prior to a cardio workout gives us both heart burn. Eggs make us gassy so it compounds the stomach feeling. The acid from the apple doesn't do us well either. As we've aged, certain foods we've had don't react well so we have had to adjust our meals. Barring there is no underlying health ailment. I would try a different morning meal changing one at a time and see what is or is not reacting with you.

I have plain bread or plain white/brown rice maybe mixed with a bit of lean 2 oz. meat protein like ground turkey breast, chicken breast or x-lean pork loin not seasoned. For my portion I consume about 350-400 calories and wait nearly an hour before heading out. I'm usually good for 2 hours with a 90-100 calorie bump mid ride. If I drink too much water, I'll get a stomach cramp so I have keep this in mind to avoid this.

It can be challenging but once you find it you'll be :)

cut out the coffee, it is majorly acidic. i had the same problem a while ago, stopped drinking coffee, no more problem. now i drink yerba mate instead, not very acidic and provides a much milder and smoother stimulation than coffee or tea.

A few suggestions.

First. Do not be overly alarmed. Heartburn can be indistinguishable from chest pain so you should see a doctor if you want, there's no reason not to. But exercise-induced heartburn is fairly common. Think about it. If you're really exerting yourself and your acidic gastric juices are sloshing around in your stomach, some of those juices are going to wash up your windpipe and cause acid reflux.

Second. Fiddle with your diet and the time at which you eat breakfast. Most gastroenterologists would recommend that you wait more than 10 minutes between a meal and exercise.

Three. Coffee is very acidic. If I were a betting man, I'd say thats your problem.

250 calories, lol wow, where did you get that from? I guess if you assumed I had butter or whatever..

1 egg is 70 calories, 5grams of fat, and like 6.5 protein.
bread is 35 calories per slice (which is all I had)

A little tiny bit of spray butter on the bread.
apple.

I probably only had 165 calories before my ride, including my apple..

But I'm dieting like a mad man too.. But maybe need to adjust my meal for my long rides.. I have one cheat night a week and usually the day before my long ride.. And last night, lol I cheated big time, with a ton of homemade pasta, sauce, meatball and sausage :)

So... I think next time, I'm gonna try 1/2 cup of Brown Rice, 3 oz of chicken, 2 oz of Avocado

should be about 400 calories and a good amount of carbs protein and fat..
and no acid...

If I skip the coffee I am going to want at least a 5 hour energy shot at least.. Anyone recommend a non coffee caffeine loaded supplement ?

THANKS ALL!

I didn't say it was bad for you. But health and fitness in my mind sort of goes together with eating well. Equal and non-dairy creamer just don't fit into my definition of "eating well." As I said above, it's just me. The stuff is not going to kill you.

not throwing stones at all.. But I really would like to know why in your opinion 2 tbsp of sugar is better than 2 packets of equal, when it comes to health and fitness?

Equal is still processed, whereas sugar is way more natural. Think about it, before your ride, wouldn't you want more than 160 calories in your system before pounding the pedals.

Sounds to me your under nurishing yourself instead of giving your body a good meal to start on. It does take more that 10 mins before your body is able to process foods to be able to use them a fuel.

I didn't say 2 spoons of sugar is any better than 2 packets of Equal. And I don't think I can explain myself any better than in I did in my previous post. Perhaps I could add that in my view, ingesting a 5 hour energy shot or a non-coffee caffeine loaded supplement would not fall into the category of "healthy eating." Enough, I sincerely hope you find the cause of your problem and a way to fix it. :)

Yes.

Heartburn can be related to muscular contractions that force acid back past the sphincter in your esophagus (and completely unrelated to what you eat). Does this happen *only* when you're riding a bike?
I'll bet a few of us have had this experience maybe an hour or so into a hard ride. The breakfast goes on hold in your stomach, while your body is hammering away like there's no tomorrow. I've gotten this kind of heart burn more than a few times, no matter what or how much I ate before (or during!). Once, the heart burn quickly healed itself by spontaneously ejecting the contents of the stomach in one good heave. Good thing nobody was behind me. I felt fine for the rest of the ride!

As Kerry suggests, I've also found drinking water minimizes this. Also relaxing the upper body while concentrating on working the legs helps.

I would try skipping the coffee and see what the results are...

I need my Caffeine fix.. I enjoy the way it makes me feel..

As for equal being processed, well almost every single thing is processed these days.. I've lost over 25lbs (28) in 5 weeks..

I am not saying thats good, but for my normal day to day I rather have no calories in my coffee than fat and calories..

But I will agree, Tomorrow morning, I will eat an hour before, a banana instead of the apple (no acid) and REAL sugar in the coffee :)
