I'm planning on building a set of wheels with Hed Belgium + rims and DT 240s hubs, 24h front 28h rear. The question is this:

Can I do 3-cross pattern on the rear wheel with the DT 240 hub in 28 hole drilling, or will this introduce too much overlap at the spoke heads, thereby necessitating going to 2-cross?

I know 3-cross in 28 hole drilling is a problem with some hubs with small flanges as it introduces overlap at the spoke heads, but I don't know if this is the case specifically with the DT 240 hub or not. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks dcgriz--

3-cross 28 hole for the rear is the most tangential, and in 28 hole I don't believe it's past tangential. Any reason *not* to do it? (I don't care about a few grams of extra weight or aesthetics for this build. I want tough and stiff for all-around duty.)

Tough and stiff have more to do with type/number of spokes, hub geometry and rim size than spoke lacing patterns. IMO, no real reason not to do x3 other than aesthetics if you dont like the way the pattern looks compared to a x2.

This is likely painfully obvious but you are doing j-bend spokes not straight-pull yeah? That 240 hub is available both ways and with straight-pull you don't have an option as to how many crosses.
Correct, I'm doing J-bend spokes.

I had considered straight pull briefly, but the argument of wider availability of parts won out for me, along with the hope that using a slightly higher spoke count at 28h and DT aerolites will offset any theoretical advantage in durability that the straight pull spokes might have. Admittedly, I have little objective data to skew this rationale definitively one way or the other after having scoured the internet.
