8 Speed Crank on 10 Speed Drivetrain

I'm Talking Campagnolo.

I know that Campagnolo changed the rings from 8 to 10 speed, but will I run into any real problems running an 8 speed Chorus crankset/rings on a 10 speed Centaur drivetrain?

I realize that shifting will be better using 10 speed rings, but like most folks, I'm living in a recession and need to save a few bucks.

I just need a little feedback before I tear apart a working 8 speed setup to convert to 10 speed.

The only component that wont be brand new is the Chorus 8 speed crankset and chainrings. Everything else will be Centaur 10 speed.

Thanks, and I did a search, but came up inconclusive, so forgive me if this has been answered 72 times before.

I am running a set of 10 spd rings on a a 9 spd. It worked good enough BUT Branford has shims (.6 and .8 mm I think) maybe call them and ask they are REALLY knowledgeable. I ordered the .6 and it is indeed better.

hey you may need to replace the rear spacers on the casette, just a thought, I have an extra set of 9 speed spacers if it is needed. You are welcome to them (That will leave me with like at least 1 maybe two spare sets...LOL)

Two issues

I do not know the real answer to your question but there are two possible issues that I see:

1. The 10-speed chain is narrower than an 8-speed chain. The teeth on your 8-speed chain rings are quite possibly too wide (thick) to work properly with a 10-speed chain. If they do "work" the extra width may be enough to cause the chain to fail. Essentially the wider teeth will push the chain's side plates off of the pins and the chain will break.

2. The width between the chain rings on the 8-speed is probably bigger than on a 10-speed. Shimming cannot make this distance smaller. At the very least, the 10-speed chain may not shift well. Worst case, it may be prone to becoming phisically wedged between the chain rings on the 8-speed cranks.

I would not recommend using this set-up until you have definitive answers on both of these questions.
