I have a 2000 Schwinn Peloton Pro 853 Reynolds steel bike. I want to be able to use wider tires on it. It has Ultegra brakes now. Are there any brakes that could replace the Ultegra brakes that would allow a larger tire to fit? Any ideas are helpful. Thanks.

The limit is usually fork crown or brake bridge clearance

Probably not. The limit to tire size on most road bikes today is the clearance between the tire and the fork crown or brake bridge. If the tire fits under the crown or brake bridge, the calipers will probably clear it - but if it doesn't fit under the crown or brake bridge, different calipers won't help.

Probably, you can fit 700x28 tires using your current brakes, but you must experiment because same size tires can smaller or bigger.

If you want much bigger tires, you should change your wheels to 650b and install long reach brakes.
Yes, that is the bike. The tire switch is intriguing idea but would add expense... well maybe not since I'll probably single speed it with an eccentric hub and need wheels... Hmmmmm. Thanks for the suggestion.
